Jason Statham’s new movie The Beekeeper follows the commission and aftermath of a tragically common cybercrime. At least the first 15 minutes, which portrays the crime, should be required watching for everyone who has a bank account and can watch an R-rated movie.

Hybridge has clients who have fallen victim to this exact same attack on their home computers. The people that have fallen for these attacks are smart people, they are just busy and trying to fix their computers so they or their family can get back to whatever they were doing.

(slight spoiler alert) The attack shown is a fake tech support attack, where a browser pop-up displays a virus alert with a big flashing message to call Microsoft for emergency support. These are quite common attacks, once a victim calls “Microsoft” (or “Apple”) they are walked through helping the “tech support engineer” remote into their computer, and things go downhill rapidly from there.

In the movie, Jason Statham metes out appropriate (though very bloody) justice, but in real life unfortunately these attackers are just growing stronger and better every day.

Please watch at least the first 15 minutes of this movie, it is real life and is crushing when it happens.
