You may have recently received an email from Google Workspace or read about Google’s announcement regarding their use of passkeys for Google Workspace on your iPhone and iPad.

What does this mean?

Google is transitioning to only using passkeys for accessing Google Workspace on your iPhone and iPad.

Passkeys are a digital credential tied to a user account, website, or application. They are a safer, passwordless way to sign on to your Google Workspace and it leverages built-in security keys on your phone. You can use biometric information (fingerprint or face recognition), PIN, or pattern to sign on without having to use your username and password. It aims to replace legacy authentication methods such as passwords. Passkeys provide strong phishing resistance since there is no password that a user can give up.

Passkeys are supported by Google starting June 5, 2023 and will become mandatory on iPhones by December 1, 2023.

What about signing in from my laptop/desktop/Android phone?

Nothing changes as of now. This is Google’s first step towards a more secure, “passwordless future”.

How do I set up a passkey on my phone?

If you are a Hybridge client, email support at Hybridge.com later this year and our engineers will be happy to send you step by step instructions on how to set it up and help you through the process. Google has also published YouTube videos and tutorials here. Please note that your administrator has to allow passkeys to be enabled on your Google Workspace.
