What is Happening?
Google is changing how Chrome extensions can access browser data to close several significant security/privacy vulnerabilities with extensions. If you are interested in the details, please google “Chrome Manifest V3”. The important part is that this transition impacts the functionality of many extensions, including uBlock Origin.
Why Does This Matter?
uBlock Origin, known for its robust ad blocker capabilities, heavily relies on features available in Manifest V2. Unfortunately, these features are restricted under Manifest V3, resulting in uBlock Origin no longer working as intended in Chrome once Manifest V3 is fully enforced in June.
Introducing uBlock Origin Lite
To get the same privacy, security, and ad-blocking capabilities of uBlock you will need to replace uBlock Origin with uBlock Origin Lite. This new version is compatible with Manifest V3 and aims to provide a similar level of ad-blocking functionality within the constraints of the new framework. While it may not have all the features of the original uBlock Origin, it is designed to continue offering effective ad-blocking capabilities under the new rules.
